Tips to Japan for first timer

19 April 2015 was my first time to Japan. Started from one of my colleagues offered me a very cheap ticket as he need to cancelled his flight due to some reason. It was mid spring where we can still spot some part of Tokyo with sakura. The return flight to/from Narita Tokyo. My 6 days itinerary covered Tokyo, Kyoto and Kawaguchiko.

Getting Aroung Japan:

Travel around Japan can be easily assessed by public transportation. Travel around city can be assessed by JR Train and Willer bus. Depends on the number of days and number of cities for the whole trip. If you travel to more than 2 cities, then JR pass is highly recommended. Midnight bus also applicable for some city at Willer bus website.

Internet Connection:

Wifi rental
I rented a pupuru wifi cost around SGD 5 per day and share for 2 people. The wifi can be collected in the airport or it can be delivered to our hotel in Japan. By the end of the trip, we need to return the wifi modem by putting it in a post box where we can easily find around the street.
You can also easily rent the wifi in any of the airport in Japan.

Sim Card
Another option is buying a sim card from your home country. It cost around SGD 30 for 10 days unlimited usage.

Itinerary

For most of the first timer to Japan, people would like to spend their journey in Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. I personally think 8 days are just enough to travel to those 3 cities.

Below are the example of my itinerary when I travel to Japan for the first time:

Day 1 : Tokyo>> Takeshita Dori, Harajuku + Line store + Shibuya + Alcatraz E.R restaurant + Kabukicho red light district
Day 2 : Tokyo>> Shinjuku Gyoen + Ichiran Ramen + Akihabara + Yakitori and Sake at Yurakcuho + Ginza shopping
Day 3 : Kyoto>> Fushimi Inari + Kiyomizudera + Gion
Day 4 : Kyoto>> Arashiyama
Day 5 : Day Trip to Kawaguchiko >> Shibazakura festival + Ice cave
Day 6 : Tokyo>> Tsukiji Market + Ueno + Shibuya + June Moon

Budget:

Easier estimation for the budget is JPY 10,000 per day exclude hotel, air ticket and shopping.
Below are the items that need to be considered in the budget:
Accommodation
JPY 5,000 per night per person
Meal
JPY 900- 1,500 per meal
JR Pass
JPY 29,110 for 7 days
JPY 46,390 for 14 days
JPY 59,350 for 21 days
Transportation
JPY 200 per metro/ bus trip
Kimono rental
JPY 5,000

For budget traveler, there is no need to worry as it is still possible to travel in a budget way. There are plenty of budget hostel and guest house in Japan.

Hope above information is useful for the first timer traveler to Japan.

Thank you for reading.

Cheers,
Elisa
