[Takayama] 2 Days Trip from Tokyo to Kanazawa – Shirakawago – Takayama (Part 3/3)

Hida Takayama 飛騨高山
Takayama is a beautiful getaway choice when you want to visit Shirakawa-go.

Getting to Takayama from Shirakawago:
After spent around 3 hours in Shirakawa-go, I traveled to Takayama with Nohi Bus. Travel between Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, and Takayama can be accessed with Nohi bus. Online reservation is required for most of the nohi routes. The Nohi Bus to Takayama is in front the Shirakawago Bus Terminal. It took around 40 minutes to arrived Takayama from Shirakawago.

As I mentioned in my previous post, my main purpose of this trip was to visit Shirakawa go. So before heading back  to Tokyo, I planned to spend around 4 hours in Takayama. I didn’t bring any luggage, so it is easy for me to walk around the city. Even if you have luggage with you, you can put your luggage in the coin locker at the bus terminal next to the train station.

Getting around Takayama:
Takayama is a small city and easy to go around by foot. There are plenty of guesthouse and shops offer bicyle rental. Also, there is Sarubobo tourist shuttle bus operate every hour between JR station, Hida Folk Village and some other tourist spots. The Hida Folk Village is abit more far from the town centre, so you may need to catch bus if you wanna visit the village. The one day pass costs JPY 600.

Street around the train station
During lunch time, we passed by a local restaurant. Takayama is famous for the Hida beef, so you may want to try the Hida beef at Takayama, as it couldn’t be found in other city in Japan.
I didn’t really like beef, so I ordered seafood rice instead. The foods are very delicious. Oishii~

After lunch, we just randomly walked around the train station, and nearby have few main attractions in Takayama with just walking distance. There are plenty to souvenirs shop along the way.

Takayama Jinya Temple
There is a temple nearby the JR station with 10 minutes of walking distance.
Opening hours : 8.45 am to 5 pm

Sanmachi Suji Old Town
After that, we walked towards the Sanmachi old town area. Sanmachi is the iconic traditional district for sightseeing in Takayama.

Along the district, you can find traditional houses, souvenirs shop, sake breweries, food and restaurants.
I was quite impressed with this district with the traditional Edo period building. This district is very popular among tourist and very crowded.
My favorite thing in Takayama is the Sarubobo dolls <3. It is one of the iconic souvenir in Takayama. Don't forget to buy some Sarubobo souvenirs and bring it home.

Hope above information are useful for people who would like to spend half day in Takayama.

Thank you for reading.

Cheers,

Elisa
