Taiwan Trip: ShiFen & JiuFen

This is my Day 1 itinerary in Taiwan on November 2015. Shifen and Jiufen make a nice day trip from Taipei around 1-2 hours by public transportation.

Getting to Shifen:
By MRT : From MRT Muzha (木柵) Station (Brown Line 1), take bus 1076 towards Pingxi (平溪).
By Train : From Taipei Main Station, take train towards Ruifang Station. Transfer to the Pingxi Line (平溪線)

Shifen Waterfall 十分大瀑布
Shifen waterfall is in short walking distance from Shifen Old Street. It is a famous spot for tourist in Pingxi area.

There is nothing much to do in the Shifen Waterfall except sight seeing and buy some drinks and snacks. Oh! There is some stalls selling local food, so we had our lunch before heading to the waterfall.

Arriving the Shifen Waterfall. Please prepare an umbrella or you will get wet.

Shifen Old Street 十分老街
Shifen Old Street is a famous spot for tourist to experience the sky lantern in the railway.
The sky lantern cost about NTD 100. A calligraphy brush will be provided and we can write our wishes on the lantern. After we finished writing our wishes, the shop keeper will assist us to light up the lantern and set it off.

Along the Shifen old street, there are plenty of souvenirs, foods and lantern shop.We spent around 40 minutes in Shifen old street including shopping and set the lantern off. Then we took train towards Ruifang to Jiufen, and it took around 30 minutes. The ticket cost around NTD 20 per person.

Jiufen Old Street 九份老街
If you watch Spirited Away, you must have known this place.

The street is like walking through a narrow path with a lot of shops selling souvenirs and foods. After walked around and snacking, we went to enjoy tea and snacks in a tea house.

A Mei Tea House 阿妹茶楼
You can find the spirited away inspiration in Jiufen especially in A Mei Teahouse. This is a famous spot for tea house among the tourist especially the Japanese. Even the waiters and waitresses can speak Japanese language.
The tea set cost around NTD 30 (SGD 15) per person. We sat there for around 45 minutes. If you want to experience the authentic tea drinking way in this teahouse, then it is definitely worth it, especially for the fans of Spirited Away.

After heading back to Taipei, we still have time to walk around Shilin Night Market for dinner and snacks.
